In search of perfect paperwhites . . . haven't gotten there yet. But I've learned that pebbles just don't work for me.

The Crazy Gardener’s Way to Plant Daffodils
November 24, 2017 – Posted in: Garden chores, Hardscaping and Projects, How-to, Narcissus, Roadside BedsThere is probably a machine that does what I did today, and does it faster, and maybe even does it better. But I don't know where I would find that machine, and even if I did, I probably wouldn't be able to afford it, not even to rent it. So it doesn't make any difference, except if I had done it with a machine, no one would think I was crazy. But I had a Vision of what I wanted to see come spring, and I was determined.
New Daffodils: Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day May 2016
May 15, 2016 – Posted in: Acquisitions, Narcissus, What's up/bloomingI have lots of spring flowers blooming in my garden, but I've posted pictures of most of them in previous years. However, I have many daffodils that are new this year or at least blooming for the first time, so I've decided to focus on them. Just for fun, I'm including them in a gallery. [...]
Roadside Yellow Daffodils Brighten My Day
May 10, 2015 – Posted in: Front Walk, Narcissus, Roadside BedsWe've been suffering from meteorological whiplash. We had snow on April 23 and a low of 22 (-5C) on April 25 . Thirteen days later it got up to 88F and we've been sweltering ever since. The Roadside Yellow daffodils that I planted last fall have been delivering their sunshine almost as soon as the [...]
Daffodil: Book Review
March 6, 2015 – Posted in: Book reviews, NarcissusI've got daffodils on my mind. Daffodils and snowdrops. As another several inches of snow fall from the sky, and the temperature once again plummets below zero (Fahrenheit), my craving for spring grows ever stronger, and every night before getting ready for bed, I go to my happy place, the springtime of the mind. One [...]
Stop Traffic With These Daffodils
November 2, 2014 – Posted in: Garden chores, How-to, Narcissus, Roadside BedsTrue confession: I have a secret desire to create a garden so spectacular that it will stop traffic. I know that's not realistic. For one thing, we don't have much traffic. If ten cars go by in an hour, we say, "Gosh, there sure is a lot of traffic on the road today." I'd settle [...]
Daffodils face down in the dirt
April 25, 2009 – Posted in: Garden Tweets, Narcissus, WeatherHigh of 88F, a record, perhaps. Can daffodils suffer heat stroke? Some of mine fell over. I took a look at them shortly before nine in the morning, and they were lovely as only a freshly opened daffodil can be. By the time I got home late afternoon, some were already past their prime, and [...]
May Blooms: Garden Bloggers Bloom Day
May 17, 2007 – Posted in: Narcissus, Native/InvasiveYes, I know the Garden Bloggers Bloom Day was yesterday the day before yesterday. I didn't get finished in time. So just pretend this is May 15th, okay? (As always, hover your mouse over any thumbnail for a caption, and click on any photo for a larger image.) Narcissus Let's start off with the narcissus. [...]
Daffodils are my favorite flowers
March 29, 2007 – Posted in: Narcissus, Plant infoTime to put my money where my heart is When I was in college, I lived in a third-floor walkup with two fellow students. Whenever anyone shut the front door to the building, all the tenants felt the resulting vibrations. And we subconsciously monitored the sound of footsteps on the stairs, calculating in the back [...]
Heirloom Narcissus
May 24, 2006 – Posted in: Narcissus, Plant info, What's up/bloomingFirst I'd better define my terms. By narcissus, I mean plants in the genus Narcissus, which many know as daffodils or jonquils. By heirloom, I mean that I inherited them. There is probably an official definition of "heirloom" as relates to Narcissus, but I don't know what it is. I have seen some of my [...]
