"Although Bluebird is a wholesaler, they are very useful as an on-line reference. Their collection is vast and includes many unusual and uncommon plants. They are also committed to introducing plants from the most northern range of native populations, seeking the most cold hardy. They have a great relationship with the Denver Botanic Garden who have been instrumental in introducing plants collected from high mountains of South Africa."--Craig Levy
- Bluestone Perennials
Not all their plants are cold climate hardy, but certainly the majority of them are. With their reasonable prices, this is a good place for a beginner to shop. I certainly did a lot of my shopping here in the early years of my garden.
- Busse Gardens
Based in Minnesota, this nursery has an extensive selection of perennials.
- Catskill Native Nursery
"Catskill Native Nursery specializes in nursery-propagated North American perennials, fruits, shrubs and trees. Come and browse - you might be surprised at the unique beauty and garden worthiness of our native flora. If you would simply like to learn more about gardening with native plants, feel free just to visit the display gardens around the 150 year old farm house where we are located in semi-rural upstate New York. Most are a mix of native and non-native plants. We also have a native-only dry shade garden, the beginnings of a prairie between the zig-zag fence and Samsonville Road, a native-only butterfly garden, and a native fruit orchard featuring Pawpaws, a Meader Persimmon, Blueberries, Dwarf Lingonberry, Serviceberries, and an Illinois Everbearing Mulberry. In Spring of ‘05 we hope to begin work on a garden modeled after a Catskill rocky summit plant community with scrub oak, lowbush blueberry, sweet fern, common juniper, bearberry, three-toothed cinquefoil, Pennsylvania sedge and others."
- Cold Climate Tomato Seeds - Short Season Tomatoes
Simply put, a cold climate tomato is a variety which is ideally suited for climates with a short growing season, which are always colder climates than the majority. Though many cold climate varieties can withstand cooler weather than others, their real value is in the fact that they mature much earlier than other varieties of tomatoes and are therefore suited for areas with shorter growing seasons and less than ideal climates.

- Evermay Nursery
Maine based alpine and Primula micro nursery
Evermay Nursery is a micro nursery located near Bangor, Maine. We specialize in alpine plants and Primula species and hybrids which are hardy in New England. At present our production is small and many items are in limited supply. Most of our plants come in 3.5" to 5" pots. Compared with other mail order nurseries, these are huge pots. We take this approach because of two important considerations. First we overwinter our plants out of doors subject to New England cold. The larger, more established plants fare better. Second, we know that many busy gardeners aren't always able to plant out new arrivals immediately. Our plants will be quite happy for several weeks in their old familiar pots.

•sells heirloom seeds, vegetable seeds, bulk wild flower seeds, ornamental grass seed, siberian tomato seeds and herb seeds to promote self-reliance and genetic preservation for cold climates and short seasons•
"We live in the mountains for high quality life. We breath clean crisp air. We drink mountain spring water. We wander freely without fear. And now, of course, we want fresh-picked, mouth-watering tomatoes. We want it all.
Because industrial agriculture is so hard on genetic diversity, 21 years ago I started wandering this tiny, blue-green planet with the goal of saving the seeds needed for successful mountain gardens and landscapes.
Although much work remains, we have grown into a family-owned, 21 year-old, bio-regional seed company dedicated to self-reliance and genetic conservation. We now sell hundreds of cold-tolerant, short-season varieties. Bill and his father represent more than 80 years experience growing gardens and seeds at high elevation."

- Jelitto Perennial Seeds
"We are specialists for seeds of perennials, wildflowers, ornamental grasses, herbs and other plants. Over 3000 varieties in excellent quality and famous GOLD NUGGET SEED® are shipped worldwide - tested for hardiness and with information to the hardiness zones of each plant in our shop!
On the company grounds are 1400 different trials of both older and new varieties. Evaluation criteria include winter hardiness as well growth habit and flowering characteristics.
We attach great importance to the preservation of the natural variability of botanical varieties by hand harvesting of early, as well as late, maturing seeds. We also produce seed from endangered species under horticultural conditions in order to protect the natural location.
In 1977 Klaus R. Jelitto developed a new procedure for eliminating the seed dormancy for cold germinators like Primrose, Pasque Flower or Gentian. Instead of germinating after 3 to 6 months, the seeds germinate uniformly within 2 to 4 weeks after sowing.
We concentrate very carefully on the seed technology sector, with special attention to seed cleaning, suitable seed storage, quality control of the seed, as well as innovative germination techniques. All seeds are carefully dried in Schwarmstedt. They are then gently cleaned to a purity level of over 98%. Equipment and seed cleaning machines developed especially for us are a prerequisite for processing into pure seed.
We encourage our home gardeners to order off our website. Our minimum order is Euros 25 ($32.37 as of 02-06-07) and though Euros is the operating currency, visa and MasterCard work seamlessly. Phytos and customs clearance are a breeze. We've got all that down."

- Lost Horizons Nursery
"Lost Horizons started out as a garden design and construction company several years ago, but we soon ran into trouble finding the perennials we wanted to use in our landscapes. One thing led to another, and we began sowing seeds and dividing plants. We are continually searching for and trying new plants; indeed, it sometimes seems an obsession (is there a need for Seedaholics Anonymous?).
The plants offered by Lost Horizons range from old cottage garden favourites to delicate alpines. A few horticultural thugs are listed -- unmasked -- but even they serve as useful groundcovers in restricted situations. The range of difficulty runs from easy to difficult (but not impossible). Gardeners tend to move from easier plants to ever-increasing challenges. Gardening can certainly be an intellectual as well as a physical challenge. There may be temporary setbacks, but they double our resolve to try again -- in a different spot, in different soil.
All of this brings to mind the saying "Been there, killed that"! Joseph Haldas takes the view that it wasn't the plant, which caused difficulty, but rather the ability of the gardener. Plants come and go; some overstep their boundaries, some completely surprise us. Of all features of a garden, foliage is one of the most significant; the interplay of sizes, forms, textures, and colours creates much of the magic while flowers bloom and fade, providing fleeting highlights to this background. Perhaps the best thing about gardening is that it is an ever-changing, never-ending process.
Lost Horizons has extensive gardens, which are open for visiting. We welcome you to take this opportunity for viewing established examples of new and unusual varieties. You are also free to wander through the trial beds in order to see the most recent, developing plants."
