Cold Climate Gardening - Merchants
- Ambergate Gardens
"The perennials offered by Ambergate Gardens are produced in Minnesota, a state well-recognized for its cold climate, and they are well-suited for the landscapes of northern gardeners. Making available a greater variety of distinctive perennial flowers to the gardener who lives in cold climates has been a primary goal of Ambergate Gardens since its inception."
- Bluebird Nursery
"Although Bluebird is a wholesaler, they are very useful as an on-line reference. Their collection is vast and includes many unusual and uncommon plants. They are also committed to introducing plants from the most northern range of native populations, seeking the most cold hardy. They have a great relationship with the Denver Botanic Garden who have been instrumental in introducing plants collected from high mountains of South Africa."--Craig Levy
- Bluestone Perennials
Not all their plants are cold climate hardy, but certainly the majority of them are. With their reasonable prices, this is a good place for a beginner to shop. I certainly did a lot of my shopping here in the early years of my garden.
- Busse Gardens
Based in Minnesota, this nursery has an extensive selection of perennials.
- Catskill Native Nursery
"Catskill Native Nursery specializes in nursery-propagated North American perennials, fruits, shrubs and trees. Come and browse - you might be surprised at the unique beauty and garden worthiness of our native flora. If you would simply like to learn more about gardening with native plants, feel free just to visit the display gardens around the 150 year old farm house where we are located in semi-rural upstate New York. Most are a mix of native and non-native plants. We also have a native-only dry shade garden, the beginnings of a prairie between the zig-zag fence and Samsonville Road, a native-only butterfly garden, and a native fruit orchard featuring Pawpaws, a Meader Persimmon, Blueberries, Dwarf Lingonberry, Serviceberries, and an Illinois Everbearing Mulberry. In Spring of ‘05 we hope to begin work on a garden modeled after a Catskill rocky summit plant community with scrub oak, lowbush blueberry, sweet fern, common juniper, bearberry, three-toothed cinquefoil, Pennsylvania sedge and others."

- Jelitto Perennial Seeds
"We are specialists for seeds of perennials, wildflowers, ornamental grasses, herbs and other plants. Over 3000 varieties in excellent quality and famous GOLD NUGGET SEED® are shipped worldwide - tested for hardiness and with information to the hardiness zones of each plant in our shop!
On the company grounds are 1400 different trials of both older and new varieties. Evaluation criteria include winter hardiness as well growth habit and flowering characteristics.
We attach great importance to the preservation of the natural variability of botanical varieties by hand harvesting of early, as well as late, maturing seeds. We also produce seed from endangered species under horticultural conditions in order to protect the natural location.
In 1977 Klaus R. Jelitto developed a new procedure for eliminating the seed dormancy for cold germinators like Primrose, Pasque Flower or Gentian. Instead of germinating after 3 to 6 months, the seeds germinate uniformly within 2 to 4 weeks after sowing.
We concentrate very carefully on the seed technology sector, with special attention to seed cleaning, suitable seed storage, quality control of the seed, as well as innovative germination techniques. All seeds are carefully dried in Schwarmstedt. They are then gently cleaned to a purity level of over 98%. Equipment and seed cleaning machines developed especially for us are a prerequisite for processing into pure seed.
We encourage our home gardeners to order off our website. Our minimum order is Euros 25 ($32.37 as of 02-06-07) and though Euros is the operating currency, visa and MasterCard work seamlessly. Phytos and customs clearance are a breeze. We've got all that down."
