The Cook’s Garden arrived in my mailbox today. I have always had success with their seeds, and I like the selection they offer, but frankly, they have to compete with Johnny’s for my seed purchases, and usually Johnny’s wins. Johnny’s seems to be more directly aimed at the cold climate grower; I can’t remember which of them comes out ahead on price. Cook’s seems to have a nicer flower selection, and I’ve been wanting to try their snapdragons for years. The absolutely best thing about the Cook’s Garden catalog, however, is that it has prints by Mary Azarian on almost every page.

Parks is owned by Wayside, which also owns The Cook’s Garden. If they own anything else, let me know. I like to keep track of these liasons. Did you know there are two versions of the Park’s catalog? A bigger one and a smaller one. I think I have the bigger one. It’s 132 pages counting the back cover. The smaller one is under a hundred pages. I’ve never compared the two, though I usually wind up getting both. I’ve never bought an awful lot from Parks. They used to have an early blooming cosmos (was it called Vega? I’ll have to check) but it doesn’t seem to be there anymore. Early bloom …

The Bluestone Perennials catalog came today. This company sells plants in three- and six-cell packs at lower prices. I cut my baby gardening teeth on Bluestone’s plants. They were common enough that I could be sure they were easy to grow, and affordable enough that I wasn’t afraid of killing them.

Yes, they’ve already started. I got Pinetree Garden Seeds and Thompson & Morgan before Thanksgiving. Today it was McClure & Zimmerman, Seymour’s Selected Seeds, Totally Tomatoes, and Vermont Bean Seed Company. I believe they are all owned by the Jung Seed Company, which also seems to own Roots & Rhizomes, Horticultural Products and Services, and R.H. Shumway’s Seeds, if the contact addresses are any indication. And who knows? Jung might own others as well.

Kathy, The Shumway catalog most people get is the large newsprint folder. I’m talking about the catalog from the Horticultural Products and Services Div. It’s almost a wholesale-type catalog. Large amounts of seed at a reasonable price. The toll free # is 1-800-322-7288. Check out Hollyhock ‘Black Currant Whirl’! I have seeded in all their various colors of pelleted Lisianthus. I fell in love with these beauties when working in a floral shop/nursery. Long lasting as a cut flower, and useful in weddings as bouts and they can be taken apart and put back together again in corsages. And a word to Rosemarie, honey, it’s the full of the moon and I know you are pregnant and very tired. Please …

Kathy, First of all, if I listed ALL the companies I order from, it would be too embarrasing. But one of my favorites is Seeds of Change out of Santa Fe, NM. Commitment to offering the highest quality organically grown, open-pollinated seed is what initially drew me to this company. It’s a bonus that all seeds and seedlings are 100% GMO-free and are grown by the company and their exclusive network of certified organic family farms and nurseries. AND they carry a wonderful line of farm tested tools from Clarrington Forge. Check out their site at www.seedsofchange.com. There is a 5% discount on items ordered online.
Another co is RH Shumway out of Randolph, WI. Go to hpsseed.com …
