It should be said, though without any intention of adding to the world’s already adequate store of guilt, that the average gardener is surprisingly lazy and, not to split hairs about it, pig-headed.

A BMSB bit me while I was asleep, on the outer corner of my left eye. The pain was as bad as that of a bad yellow jacket sting. It released its smell at the same instant it bit me. This was a really unpleasant awakening! I think it was on that area of my face because it was looking for a sip of moisture, and also possibly the minerals or other substances in my tears or blood. The worst pain lasted for a half hour, and there was also a nasty crawly itch sensation. I applied aloe gel, and that took care of most of the pain and itch. The bite was three days ago, and there are now areas of swelling around the eye, a noticable red scab at the corner of the eye, and that whole side of my face feels a little stiff. This bite was as bad as or worse than a yellow jacket sting, both in pain and in duration of the side effects. I live in northeastern PA.
