One noticeable difference between this Garden Writers Association Symposium and the one I attended in 2007 was the increased presence of video recording. Not just the movie function on the ubiquitous digital camera, but more sophisticated set-ups were also used. Here’s a sampling of what’s been posted on the web:
I just happened to be nearby when David Perry recorded Riz Reyes’ extemporaneous tribute to Juniper Level Botanic Garden and Plant Delights Nursery. I didn’t realize at first that David was filming Riz, which is why you’ll catch a glimpse of me and hear my one-liner. Riz’s enthusiasm was amazing to watch.
Shirley Bovshow was one busy lady in Raleigh, filming seemingly non-stop. What you’ll see below is the trailer, or appetizer, for her more involved Garden World Report.
Be patient, and you’ll catch my cameo appearance near the end.

Burning Hearts
Okay, okay–it’s not all about me. I know of one other video: Billy Goodnick asking symposium attendees what plants they killed this year. I couldn’t figure out how to embed that one, so you’ll have to go over to Fine Gardening to see that. I’m not in that one, but since you asked, I killed my ‘Burning Hearts’ bleeding heart when I let a flowering tobacco flop over it for too long. The rain didn’t help. It was a trial plant from Skagit Gardens, but I liked it so much I’m going to have to buy a replacement next year. How about you–what plants did you kill this year?

When dealing with frost it is always best to be paranoid. In the spring never think it is too late for one more frost to come. And in the fall never think it too early.
