Frog Pond

Frog pond

She’s not kidding; those frogs are HUGE. They eat mice! I tried to get a picture, but of course, they all jumped in the pond as I pressed the button. This pond is visible from the dining room and from a stone terrace. In the background you can see the big grass border that is also in the background view in the Glowing Shrub photo.

Kathy Purdy discovered the joys of writing in fourth grade, when she started corresponding with a former classmate. She's been writing letters ever since, first on looseleaf, then electronically, and now as weblog entries. That makes you, the blog reader, her pen pal. Her first independent (though frustrating) attempts at gardening were made in high school, though the gardening bug didn't bite hard until her mid-thirties, when she found herself mistress of a rural home on 15 acres. • USDA Hardiness Zone:4 • AHS Heat Zone: 3 • Location: rural; Southern Tier of NY • Geographic type: foothills of Appalachian Mountains • Soil Type: acid clay • Experience level: intermediate • Particular interests: colchicums, narcissus, cottage gardening, NY native plants, gardening with/for children

There are two difficulties with ground covers: first to get them to grow, and then to get them not to.

I love ponds and the sound of running water. It’s inspiring to see that this pond has shade. I had a pond at “our other house.” Now that we’ve removed some front yard trees (gasp!), it’s a possibility. (Tree removal was a very serious decision… necessary. See my August 13 post.)

I love the pond. It’s the stone background that ‘makes’ it for me. Water + Stone then plants to soften the look :)

I like how you organized this post. I only expected to view a larger version of the image. Finding more was a great surprise. Now on to the next.

Designing your garden for “you to see” has always made more sense to me than doing anything for others potential approval, validation and an ego food. I got rid of my garage to expand my backyard – being single I had no man to have a coronary over no garage – just a place to store more junk. The older I get, the more I plan my shopping trips around the weather…so maybe she won’t be carrying any groceries in the snow?
