Christmas eve sunrise

Image of winter sun rising in the eastOne of the nice things about short winter days is that it’s not too difficult to get up before sunrise. These two photos were taken a bit after seven thirty in the morning. It’s not going to be much of a white Christmas, I’m afraid. Sunday the snow pack was dissolved by rain and highs in the 50s(F), and the highs are supposed to be above freezing the rest of the week.

In the second photo below, the edge of the cloud cover appears as a straight line, revealing the golden light coming up over the horizon.

The Heavens are telling the glory of God,
The wonder of his work displays the firmament.

Today that is coming speaks it the day,
The night that is gone to following night.
The Heavens are telling the glory of God,
The wonder of his work displays the firmament.

In all the lands resounds the word,
Never unperceived, ever understood.
The Heavens are telling the glory of God,
The wonder of his work displays the firmament.
~from “The Creation” by Franz Joseph Haydn

When dealing with frost it is always best to be paranoid. In the spring never think it is too late for one more frost to come. And in the fall never think it too early.

I’m with Benjamin-too early to be awake unless you have to! (Which is why the only sunrise I see is on my way to work 😉 Love that second picture, it’s like the stage curtain coming up.

As Nan said, winter sun shots are the best–I’ve just figured this out this year, but I’m more in tune to things with my larger spread now.

And I beg your pardon, but even though the sun rises after 7 here, that’s still too early for me. Yuck.

We sang this part of “The Creation” by Haydn when I was in junior high choir. Whenever I see ” a bit of glory” this song comes to my mind.

Thank you all for your Christmas greetings. Merry Christmas and best wishes for a great gardening year!

There’s really something special about sunrises and sunsets in winter, I think–even more than at other times of year. Thanks for sharing your photos, Kathy–and Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas Kathy!

Very pretty sunset. No snow left over from a few days ago here either. But at least we have had electric for a few days now.
