The Urban Compost Tumber

Readers of this blog know I tend to get absorbed in the details of garden projects. But somehow the making of compost has been immune to such obsessions. To my mind, compost just happens. I don’t really give it much thought. It might occur to me in the spring that the piles should really be turned and moved to the next bin, or, it might not. Consequently, our composting “system” looks like this:Image of overgrown compost binsThe only decent compost here came from the municipal land fill where they compost tree trimmings and such. Since our compost piles don’t build up enough heat, the seeds from last year’s vegetables survive the winter and grow to take over the bins.

Back from the Garden Writers symposium
