Well, it was a 2 stinkbug day today, not at my house, but at my mom's, which is only 5 blocks away. I let out my famous screams, then grabbed the kleenex, and did the dirty deed. Why, oh, why, do they rear their ugly heads right around Christmas?! Others have pointed this out before. We've had zero sightings til just now.....I still consider myself lucky that it's not as bad as in year's past, but, damn, I just wasn't prepared for these two today.

Nikki, It's been a fantastic fall with regards to the stinkbugs! No sightings over here! And yet, you mention "winning the war" because of all our precautions, personally, I think it's just good luck! I have friends and neighbors that take no precautions, and they don't have them either. I think the SBs moved.....and we all got lucky this year. I never did any spraying. I've been having the house professionally treated the last three years....this year I never got around to it, and it made no difference.

Now, Nikki, this story is for you: Last week I had to take my mother to the doctor. Beautiful new offices, brand new construction about 5 miles west of my house. The office is infested with SBs! I let out one of my famous involuntary screams when they were trying to get my mom on the examining table. Huge Grandaddy of all Stinkbugs climbing up the table....my scream must have pierced through the office because all the nurses came running toward the room. How embarrassing, but we all had a good laugh. The Drs. and the nurses said it's been an ongoing problem. So strange! The place is spotless (otherwise), brand new and I just don't understand it.

So, I really think it's a matter of luck. But, I'm very glad to be on the side of Good Luck this year!

How's everyone? Looks like there hasn't been much activity on here lately. I have to admit, I'm lovin' this very light SB season this year! :) I haven't seen any outside on house in a few weeks...so rare. The one warm day this past week I spotted 2 asian ladybugs crawling along the one wall of house where usually SB's are seen. I haven't seen these bugs around in about 2 years...used to see lots of them. Did we all just get lucky this year OR are we finally winning the war against these annoying stink bugs? What a crazy month for October---nearly 2 inches of snow yesterday, 32 freezing degrees outside, and no stink bugs to be found. Oh yeah...almost forgot...HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Just an update. I did ANOTHER thorough cleaning again today. (such a beautiful, crisp Fall day too to be stuck inside cleaning). I used the spray the vet gave me for a 2nd time since it's been almost 2 weeks since the 1st spray. I also did a quick spray of the yard (used the stink bug stuff)...not the whole yard, just the outer perimeter where it's shadiest. I also sprayed under shrubs/bushes & some of the walkway (little cracks in cement). I'll see how this goes for now. On a positive note, I saw no stink bugs around...none! :)

Thanks Susan. I looked at the can of spray the Vet sold me, and it is by Vet Kem. It does mention that it is an insect growth regulator. I remember the assistant there said to just spray lightly, wait about an hour or two, vacuum, then you can enter the areas as well as your dog. I guess I need to spray this a 2nd time? The can says you can re-spray in another 14 days. Maybe I'm missing areas? She said I didn't need to spray entire rooms/floors...sort of spot treat---just the areas where the dog goes the most. My dog doesn't sleep on any people beds or go on the sofa/furniture, and I sprayed his doggie bed already with this stuff. I treated all the carpet areas that I could think of. Do these things hide in the baseboards? I had to open all the windows because the smell lingers for awhile. Can this stuff be used on kitchen floors? I mopped down the kitchen floor (not with the spray) and I vacuum it. I've been cleaning like crazy, and I've never seen the eggs. Are they large enough to see...LOL! I'm surprised that Frontline isn't working too. Somewhere I read that the fleas may still come inside on the dog, but after they try biting, they jump off in a frenzy to get off the dog (not sure if that's correct). I also read that some people are switching to stronger topical treatments. I think I have to re-do the house and treat the yard stronger (maybe spray some of my Buggslayer used for the stink bugs on areas of the yard for the fleas (it says on the bottle it can be used for them too). I don't think the DE worked, but then again, we had some rain recently, and it probably got washed away. Do I just focus on the shady areas or the entire yard? I guess this is going to be a long process.

Hi Nikki. ugh, fleas. I just found out my shepherd has a severe allergy to dust mites! after $3,000 worth of medical procedure, biopsy and tests for nose bleeds.. what's next.. now we are having all carpet removed from our home! bugs... can't live with em, cant live without em. Wow, even Frontline is not working for you? that is surprising. The super flea story is frightening. Most important is to get the flea life cycle disrupter .. precor or other growth regulator they are called. The flea eggs are everywhere! cracks in the floor, they are sticky and can't be killed with adult flea insecticide. have to wait for them to hatch.. and they will. Continue treating inside home with good product, we used to sell vet kem.. and use the frontline.. takes some time for the cycle to get thru and stop the eggs from developing. keep vacuuming, put a flea collar inside your canister to kill any flea that may hatch inside. you can email me direct with questions if you want.. I'm surprised the vet would send home capstar and frontline.. both adult flea killer.. we must prevail! at least it seems the SB's have given us a break. I saw a SB poison at True value.. but VERY toxic to bees!!! we must be careful of that stuff.. no bees, no food.. and the bees are in trouble already.

To Susan and Jane (and anyone else that can help)...okay, these fleas are STILL around. Not a lot, but I'm still finding them when I vacuum daily. Say 2 or 3 (but to me, I'm thinking the worst of these things and I'm imagining like hundreds hiding out someplace). I've been using the canister vacuum that you can see through (it's getting expensive buying bags for my other vacuum that has a bag and you have to toss the bag so often). I have 2 vacuums, so I use the clear cannister one, examine it, then run outside and dump into bag out there. I guess the spray the vet sold me for the house isn't working, or, I need to do the house a second time already (although it says on the can it works for months, I think). My dog has the Frontline Plus on him, but I found 2 fleas on him yesterday...one jumped off and onto me while I was flea combing him...ugh! I have one CapStar pill left for him, so I'm going to give that to him tomorrow. This whole flea stuff is frustrating...almost as bad as the stink bugs! I don't know if this is true, but a friend of mine told me these fleas are called "super fleas"...last year and this year...and the topical stuff for the dogs isn't working like it should. Her vet told her this. I guess this is going to be a long battle with these fleas.

As always, thanks for your help Jane. I took your advice about the DE. I was home today, so I did some work outside. Also, the stink bugs were back on this very warm day in Autumn. I saw 3 walking along the sides of windows...right where it was sprayed yesterday (perfect!). I checked over my car (saw none). I had to run to the store this afternoon, and I had a run-in with one clinging to the glass door of the store. I opened the door so carefully and then moved quickly inside (afraid it was going to land on me). When leaving the store, it appeared to be gone. C'mon cold weather. I know the cold doesn't kill all of them, but at least I won't have to see them around. Hate you stink bugs!!!
