This Green World, Revisited

Judy, you called This Green World one of your favorite books, so I had to go see for myself. When I discovered the only book my library had by him was The Lost Books of the Bible and The Forgotten Books of Eden, I confess I got a little leery. But I had my library go out-of-system and get me the book. I was not disappointed. The book inspires wonder by describing the structure and function of plants in the clearest, calmest, most observant prose, with just a dash of humor. The following passage is typical:

One warm sunny day in midsummer, I focussed my camera on two square inches of a yarrow flower cluster. . . . Insects

Upstate Gardeners’ Journal

Those of you in the Rochester, NY area should check out Upstate Gardeners’ Journal, if you’re not already familiar with it. Now, Rochester is not what I would consider a cold climate; they’ve got Lake Ontario moderating their winter temperatures. But as a resident of upstate New York myself, I heartily support a magazine that covers our diverse and beautiful region. So many people seem to think all of New York state is New York City. NOT! And if Maine can have People, Places, and Plants, which no longer covers Maine exclusively, why can’t upstate New Yorkers have a gardening magazine of their own? So I plan on doing everything I can to give this magazine …

I think I have not

I think I have not bought things from Richter’s yet. I may still, but I am trying to play it by ear. I have figured out that I need at least another 400 square feet of garden space in order to plant the seeds I already ordered, not including 2 varieties of corn that I can’t imagine that I will be able find room for. I have a formal garden planned out for the 400 square feet, but I need it dug by April15th or earlier, and since I am never, ever, ever going to give birth, I don’t see how I can do all that digging with an 18 pound baby in my uterus.
